Self-Control as a Choice Based on Values

Self-control isn’t just about restraint; it’s a reflection of our deepest values. It defines how we navigate change, particularly in overcoming challenges like emotional eating. Here are four distinct approaches to tackling this issue:

1. The Diet Approach:  This method hinges on measurable outcomes like weight loss. It revolves around food choices, calorie counts, and the discipline of self-control. However, it often falters when weight loss expectations aren’t met or goals are reached without a sustainable maintenance plan.

2. The Student Approach:  Similar to studying, this approach emphasizes knowledge and understanding. It involves learning about nutrition, food groups, and dietary principles. Yet, once information is mastered, motivation can wane, and the approach loses effectiveness.

3. The Drama Approach:  Here, success depends on motivation and excitement. It’s about the thrill of the journey and accumulating positive experiences. However, when excitement diminishes, so does commitment to change.

4. The Values Approach: This approach connects change to deeply held values. It acts as a superpower, enabling individuals to overcome obstacles regardless of circumstances. For instance, someone committed to being a vegan will maintain their dietary choices even in challenging situations.

Finding Your Superpower

For me, that superpower is self-respect. Valuing respect, both for others and myself, has transformed my approach to food and health. I realized I wasn’t respecting myself by using food to cope with challenges, which led to weight gain and health issues. By prioritizing self-respect, I gained the strength to make choices aligned with what’s best for my body and soul.

What’s Your Superpower?

Living in alignment with one’s highest value, whether it’s respect, integrity, health, freedom, or another core principle, serves as a guiding force in navigating life’s changes with resilience and purpose. It provides a deep-rooted motivation to overcome challenges, maintain consistency, and foster personal growth. What drives you to live in alignment with your value?
